The Best Make it Yourself Antibacterial Cleaning Spray

I’ve never been the kind of person who sprays one of those extra strength commercial cleaning sprays and then draws in a deep breath thinking ‘Mmmm, that smells nice’.

Mostly, I’m left gagging from the overpowering chemicals used in most commercial cleaning sprays. Wondering how many brain cells I just killed, or whether I’ll enter some kind of hallucinogenic state from all the “colourful” additives in those products.

So, for the past few years, I’ve just been making my own.

I’ve been through quite a few variations in the formula of my antibacterial cleaning spray. But over the years, I’ve created a recipe that I LOVE and use every day in my home. What’s more, the ingredients are SO CHEAP, that I can’t even remember when I bought my last batch of ingredients – it was that long ago!

Because I’ve refined my recipe and know what ingredients I’ll need, I just buy them in bulk as it saves me even more bucks. Sweet!

This antibacterial cleaning spray uses just a few ingredients and has amazing germ-killing power! How? It’s made with a blend of essential oils that are antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal and deodorizing. Plus, with the added disinfecting power of alcohol and vinegar, there aren’t going to be many germs that can stand up against this powerful cleaning spray! Effective and super cheap!

DIY Antibacterial Cleaning Spray Recipe

Ingredients

80ml Isopropyl or Rubbing Alcohol (90% or higher)
120ml White vinegar
300ml water
20-25 drops essential oil blend (I use a fairly even mix of Lavender and Tea Tree which combined, are antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal and deodorizing!)
A 500ml (16oz) glass spray bottle (preferably amber or blue to protect the essential oils from being diminished by natural sunlight – a stainless steel spray bottle is also effective)

Method

Pour 80ml of alcohol into your glass bottle. Use a funnel if this makes it easier.
Add 20 to 25 drops of essential oils to the alcohol.
Put the lid on the glass bottle and give it a good shake to disperse the essential oils into the alcohol. This ensures that the oils are thoroughly mixed through your solution otherwise the oils would just sit on top of the water content that you’ll be adding later.
Take off the lid and add the white vinegar. At this point, I normally give it a little swirl to mix the vinegar through.
Then fill the rest of your bottle up with water, put the spray nozzle on and get spraying!

Tips:

DO NOT add liquid soap to this recipe! When vinegar combines into contact with liquid soap like Castille soap, you’re creating a chemical reaction which unsaponifies the soap. That’s just a fancy way of saying it turns the fat content of the liquid soap back into fat – and this produces scum! This is a rookie mistake I see a lot of people make when creating their own cleaning spray. Don’t do it!

This cleaning spray does not create bubbles, but it doesn’t need to in order to clean. Once you’ve started using it, trust me, you won’t want to go back to those toxic cleaners anymore. And you’ll feel much better knowing that you’re helping the environment and benefitting your family’s health by eliminating surplus chemicals from your home.

Some other essential oil blends you could try include;

Lavender and bergamot for a more floral antibacterial blend
Lemon, orange, and grapefruit for a citrusy blend that’s also antibacterial
Cinnamon bark, eucalyptus, clove, rosemary, lemon, and orange for an immune-boosting blend
