Hello, my friend! If you’re here reading this, it might be safe for me to assume that you’re looking for a great way to track your goals. Perhaps you have goals that you’ve set for yourself. But for whatever reason, you keep getting distracted and lose sight of them. Or perhaps you get off to a good start. But then your goal tracking becomes boring and so you miss a day, then another until… Well, you get the idea!
Whatever your reason for being here today, I’m pleased to tell you that I’ve got something that’ll make you very happy indeed!
If you’re here because you consume all my content (you’re totally awesome btw!) and you’re not even sure why goal tracking is a thing, let’s take a moment to look at it.
Why it’s important to track your goals
1. It keeps them front of mind
Firstly, tracking your goal keeps it front of mind. This is really important with goals because where focus flows, energy goes. When you put more focus on something, you spend more energy on it. It’s fuel for goal achievement and helps to ensure the success of you accomplishing your goal.
2. You can gauge your progress
Secondly, when you track your goals, you can better gauge how far along you are. You can see how much progress you’re making or where you’re getting stuck. Without some kind of tracking system in place for your goal, it can become difficult to know how much you’ve done or what you still have left to do. Tracking, therefore, is vital to being able to determine when you’ve reached your goal or when you’re going to reach it.
3. It’s confidence-building
Thirdly, tracking gives you a sense of accomplishment and confidence as you begin to create a streak of successful completions. There’s nothing like seeing a series of You did it!‘s staring back at you and giving you an emotional pat on the back. It’s uplifting and encouraging to be reminded that you’ve got what it takes. All you need to do is put one foot in front of the other. And that’s something we’ve all got in us!
So, how do you track your goals?
There’s more than one way to skin a cat track a goal. (I’m not sure I want to know the origin of that saying!) And depending on the type of goal you have, you might find that one way is better than another for you.
Goal projects
Some big goals look like projects. In that, they have a definite end date and a list of different actions that need to be completed to reach the goal. For these kinds of goals, you’ll find that a goal planner or task manager is great for keeping on track with your goal.
When you use a goal planner to track this kind of goal, you can see at a glance the actions you need to accomplish. As well as how many actions are still left to complete. Having something visual that you can keep in front of you is extremely handy. Especially if you’re a visual or creative person.
Often Creatives find that out of sight is definitely out of mind. So if you’ve been struggling to stay on top of your goals, it could be that your goal needs to be somewhere you’ll see it every day (several times a day).
Goal habits
For habit goals, or goals made up of repetitive actions (writing a book, knitting 10 scarves for Christmas), you’ll find that a goal tracker is better suited for this.
A goal tracker allows you to mark off your completion of a particular task. Whether that’s exercising for ten minutes, sitting down to write for twenty minutes or knitting 10 rows.
With a goal tracker, you check off each completion and watch as you begin to build a streak of successful Done‘s. Getting to the finish line with your goal becomes less about the big (and often overwhelming picture) of writing a book or knitting 10 items and more about not breaking your streak.
That’s the beauty of using a goal tracker. You can take your eyes off the often fear-inducing heights of the mountain you’re attempting to climb and can focus instead on just putting one foot in front of the other.
