If you dread the thought of cleaning or frequently procrastinate doing chores around your home, this post is for you.

I’ve always had this dilemma; I hate cleaning AND I don’t have a cleaner or a maid that cleans my house every day. What’s a girl to do?
Option 1 – I could turn my kids into minions and have them do all the cleaning Cinderella style.
This has crossed my mind!
But with them being quite young, they’re not able to do all the chores and certainly not to a good level. I mean, they’re kids. How clean will your bathtub be after you let your 7-year-old loose on it with a sponge and a shower hose? Not very clean is the answer!
Plus, I don’t really wanna turn into the wicked stepmother figure who’s always yelling to clean the tapestries and the draperies and let’s not forget to give the cat it’s bath! Although that’s what I feel like on some days..!
Option 2 – embrace doing cleaning in my home.
I opted for option 2. That’s not to say my kids don’t have their fair share of household chores. It just means that I’m not totally out of the household chores picture {sigh!}. And I decided, that if I have to do chores in my home, I may as well make it more fun and less…of a chore.
7 Ways to Make Cleaning More Fun
1. Play music
We love using Amazon playlists in our home whilst cleaning. A couple of our favourite playlists to use as a family are Kids Party, Kid-Friendly Classics and Kid-Friendly Pop.
We hardly ever clean anything without listening to something at the same time! It’s a total motivation boost!
2. Listen to a podcast
Whenever I’m cleaning by myself or, more often than not, washing the dishes, I’m listening to a podcast. In fact I simply can’t wash dishes without a podcast on. This has probably more to do with the fact that I really hate washing dishes than anything else!

I listen to a lot of business podcasts and some of my favourite at the time of writing this are: Lead to Win, Christy Wright’s Business Boutique, Online Marketing Made Easy, The Jennifer Allwood Show, The 5 AM Miracle with Jeff Sanders and The One Thing (and that’s just a few! I’m a total podcast fan!!)
3. Watch TV whilst ironing
I never used to iron. When I say never, I would only iron something if we were going to a wedding and a shirt absolutely on pain of death required it! I make a point of buying clothes that don’t require ironing so that I never have to bother with this chore!! So my ironing board used to stay put in one room and never get touched. #justbeinghonest
Now, however, I take it out every Monday evening(-ish) with my spray bottle of homemade ironing water and I set up in the living room. If I’m feeling like I need a bit of a treat, I might pour myself a glass of wine too! 🙂

Because we have Amazon Prime, we get a lot of movies and TV shows included, so I often put something on to watch whilst ironing.
Now I actually enjoy ironing! I really look forward to it! My ironing water smells divine and is so relaxing. I think it’s a great evening activity and helps me to go off to bed and sleep well (although that’s probably more to do with the lavender ironing water than the job itself)!
4. Use essential oils to lift your mood while cleaning
So I use lavender essential oil when I’m ironing. But I also use other essential oils around the house when I’m cleaning.

My multi-surface cleaner uses a blend of essential oils that’s great for your immune system. My window cleaner uses lemon and grapefruit essential oils. Plus, I often have some essential oils in my diffuser just going to help energise or relax me depending on what I need.
And my favourite blends include;
- Women’s Balance which is calming and grounding
- Focus which is great for….focus!
- Lavender & Tea Tree essential oils
- Lemon and Grapefruit essential oils
5. Use humorous tools to bring a smile to your face
I remember one Christmas someone got my husband a pair of washing up gloves that had pink feathers and diamanté jewels around the cuffs! It was a funny gift which he occasionally wore. But I loved using them because they made cleaning a more bearable task. They brightened up the dull and often gross task of taking out the garbage or cleaning the toilet.
So here are some tools that I think could bring a smile to your face while you clean and make cleaning more fun!:
- These flower power cleaning accessories!
- These glam washing up gloves!
- This cute domestic goddess apron
- Or check out this range of cute and quirky aprons!
- This excellent and beautiful duster
- Or this cute retro plant mister
6. Enlist family help
There’s a saying that goes ‘Many hands make light work’. And that means that the more people who can help, the easier the job is to do (unless you’re in a kitchen where too many cooks are supposed to be a bad thing).

So if you’re really struggling to get through your boring cleaning jobs, get other family members involved. It’s their house and their mess too. And yes, even babies can put things into bins!
I regularly get my kids cleaning with me. We all come together, distribute jobs to everyone, start our cleaning music playlist (point number 1 above) and work as quickly as possible! And the kids enjoy doing chores a lot more when we’re doing them all together for some reason!
7. Give yourself a well-earned reward
This has got to be my favourite! We’re all big kids essentially and we do well with rewards.
So I’ll often tell myself, just five more minutes Elisa, and then you can have a lovely hot latte with a couple of bikkies and a flick through my Houzz app! I find that I’m able to relax more when I’m in a tidy environment, so the reward always feels sweeter when the work has been done.
So, how can you reward yourself for a job well done? It doesn’t have to be something that costs much. It just has to be something that motivates you to get the job done so you can get on to the good stuff!
So, there you have it! 7 ways to make cleaning more fun…and less of a chore!
